music magazine in depth analysis

Kerrang! is a brand that specialises in Rock Music. It originally began as a magazine and in 2004 Kerrang Radio was launced. A Kerrang tv channel also exists and as of 2005, all of its programme content is music videos, the majority of which is open scheduled, for text requests from their playlist.

What institution owns your magazine? e.g. kerrang Bauer media
Bauer Media Group owns Kerrang! it is a multinational media company headquartered
in HamburgGermany which operates in 15 countries worldwide. It is Europe’s largest
privately owned publishing Group. The Group is a worldwide media empire offering
over 300 magazines in 15 countries, as well as online, TV and radio stations.Bauer Media is
a cross platform UK-based media Group consisting of many companies collected
around two main divisions – Magazines and Radio - widely recognized and rewarded as
being industry innovators.

What effect does this have on the content? whats in it like pics, people, writing
(stories)
The effect bauer media group has on kerrang! is because bauer are a huge media group so
they can get huge stars and exclusives in there magazine. They can get all artists to the
same place for photo-shoots. Same themes throughout the magazine e.g. same colour and
fonts influenced, they can get the biggest things that are going on in the rock world each
week.

Let’s discuss the flat plan – what have you learnt about the magazine?
adverts, double pages on people, i have learnt they focus on bands as they use up a lot of
double page spreads on bands. They have alot of pull out posters so

Discuss the mise en scene (Props, lighting, setting, costume) – what impact
does this have on the audience?
the lighting is dark and black but light is shown on there faces. the costumes are leather
with spikes and chains they also wear make up which is dark eye make up and white
painted faces. Busy alot on page, packed. gives our main base of younger readers everything
they need to get into and on top of this the interest in older, harder bands, which gives
their role as an educator.

Who is the target audience? How do you know this?
The ages range from 16-24. The target audience is mainly for the younger teenage readers who are more open to different genres of rock music from Emo, Heavy metal and

Thrash etc. The magazine is for teenagers and young adults because the adverts relate to there interests -
festival and concert tickets, clothing, advertising helping people to get into the music industry who are in a
band or solo. the price is quite cheaper then other magazines which could suggest its for people with less
money which are mostly young people with no jobs. gender would be mainly boys as there are hard rock and
metal iconic male bands on the front cover pulling angry faces or violent expressions. but can also be for
female readers as they are targeted by the use of male bands on free pull out posters and feature interviews.

What is the tone of the writing? (persuade, inform, choose article and look at it
or overall tone lighthearted happy or serious)
the tone of very casual and relaxed, it is very informal as the target audience are young, there is a humorous attitude but it also it informs the reader as well.

What do they offer their readership? (free poster, c.d., etc tickets)
in kerrang! they are offering the reader 10 free posters, also chances to win opportunities
to go to concerts and meet bands, play music with famous bands.

What elements would you like to ‘borrow’ for your own magazine? (what
would i want to use in my magazine
i would borrow the layout of the contents page as it is set out nicely in columns to read.

music magasine analysis

The image is of Robbie William's face which makes him the main attention of the magazine. the background is just plain dark blue and the writing is mainly in red and some of it in white which goes with the logo which is also red and white with the magazine and stands out against the blue background. it also uses quotes and a rhetorical question. the feature stories. this magazine was made in 1998. It also has a barcode, date and a catchline 'music for life' underneath the logo.

The image on Vibe Magazine is of sean combes aka P.Diddy so the focus is on him and it is also in black and white. The background is just grey which makes the mast head and writing stand out. The feature stories are in red and white in a bold font, the masthead is also bold in red writing with a small black shadow which really stands out. It used a quote from him so people will want to read the whole story. This magazine was made in 2000. it also has a barcode in the corner.

The image on Billboard magazine is a mid-shot picture of Alicia keys. the image of her covers half of the masthead which makes her the main focus and importance of the magazine. the background is just one color that is a pink/purple color which goes with her top she is wearing. Also her pink trousers have been made to go with some of the text. The feature stories are in white and yellow text with a plain font which matches the masthead. This magazine was made in 2007.

The image is of Wiz Khalifa and Amber Rose this picture also covers the masthead/logo of the magasine so that the picture is the main focus. The image is in Black and White. The background is grey/white. the feature storys are in black so it stands out against the light background. the healine 'nobody beats the wiz' is in capital letters and in red which matches the name/logo of the magasine, which is eyecatching for the audience. it also has a barcode for people to buy it and a website for people to go on.

school magazine

The best bits are the font and style of the text in eehs, also the main picture on the front page looks good because its really clear to see, the worst bits are the feature stories could have been set out better and more exiting as in the font and colors. if i done it again i would have set it out differently like more of a magazine e.g. feature stories on the side and some more color to it and bolder and exciting fonts. it has helped me think about creating my music magazine as i know more of how to lay it out and where to put the text and the type of font and color depends on what time of magazine your doing. i found it easy finding a good picture for the cover image and setting the images out i also found it easy finding the right type of font for the mast head. i found it hard trying to set out where the feature stories should be and what type of colours to use to make it stand out. I have used codes and conventions of a normal magazine such as a mast head, logo, date line, cover story, main image, feature storys with images and a barode which all makes the magazine look professional.
The best bits on the contents page is the way the pictures are set out and how the writing is set. the worst bits are probly the font and colors of it as they could be better and more exciting that really stand out an doesn't look boring. if i had to do it again i would of used more fonts then just the same one and changed the color of it and the background its on and i would of put a main background on instead of just plain white background. creating this magazine has helped me to think about making my music magazine as it helped me see what works and what doesn't work for the layout and what colors that don't go together. i found it easy getting the pictures and seeing a good way how to set them out i found it hard choosing the colors as you dont want it too look boring but it can look to tacky with a lot of colors. i have used codes and conventions of a normal magazine contents page such as the main heading (contents), images for the storys included in the magazine and page numbers with summarys of what is on each page.
