evaluation part 1

front cover

mast head- my magazine name is choice i have put it in big bold white writing and a red background which is a popular thing to do in music magazines for mastheads because it is the convention that is suppost to stand out the most.
image- there is only one image on the front of my magazine to show that cassie is the main focus the picture is a mid shot and she is looking right into the camera lens to draw people in also you can see her outfit which can attract girls if they are wearing something nice.  cover lines- the cover lines inform the reader what will be in choice magazine, the colour of the cover lines are in white bold font because they stand out against the darker background i have also done certain bits in red because it is more important and catches the readers eye as it is the only colour used. i used a font which wasn't very formal as it is a magazine for young adults teenagers it is also very bold which grabs attention.strap line- i have put the strap line at the bottom of my magazine so the top could focus on the name of the magazine, the strap line is is bold white writing with a red background i done it like this so it would stand out more because it is an "exclusive". colour: i only used 3 colours; black, white and red. this can make it more attractive to the reader as the red really stands out and can draw you in. i also only used 3 colour so it was easy on the eye and was still professional by not being to busy with alot of different colours going on.

barcode/website/dateline-i put the barcode at the bottom of the magazine as its less important, it has the price just above it and the website of the magazine www.choice.com i put the website next to the price because the price of the magazine is one of the main things people look at so whist people  see the price they will see the website. the date is also in the same place next to the price so people can see what issue it is.

main cover line/ quote-  the main cover line is "cassie" which is the celebritys name which is in a very bold font with a white background to stand out even more and show thats who is on the front cover. i also put a quote on the page to give the reader an insight of the story.

contents page

masthead/ heading- i have again put choice in the same place as it is on the front cover so its the first thing that stands out and they make sure they know what magazine they are reading, next to it i have put the heading contents so its the next thing that the readers will see.

date/ website- just under the heading i put the date and website i put it there so its closer to the top of the magazine as people first look at top of the page then make there way down.

subheadings/ describtion- i used subheadings for my magazine so its easyer for my audience to find what there looking for as they are young it is better for them instead of getting confussed. under the subheadings i had  smaller subheadings  that say whats on and what page its on i put these in red and bold so it catches there eye and they remember what page what they are looking for is on i also put descriptions underneath each small subheading to summurize and draw the readers in even more by putting rhetorial questions in to make them feel like they are being asked by choice, and also using words such as "free" which automaticaly attracts the reader as everyone likes the idea of not paying for something.

image/description- i used a picture that i took of the "celebrity" for my magazine and edited it to give a polaroid effect to bring a old effect in to a modern magazine.i also used a picture i took at a concert and also gave that a polaroid effect. i put a description beside each picture to give a short insight of the story, and have used word techniques such as "exclusive" which draws people in as it could be something they dont know about and they feel as if they are the first to find out.

double page spread

headline- i chose to put the celebritys name "cassie" in big writing as thats who the double page is about her. i put her name in funky bold writing which resembles her personality.

strap line- a brief description of what the story is about, i put it in italic and bold to stand out and get people to read it if they are flicking through the magazine.

Quotes- my are stole from the double page spread interview that will shock/ attract the reader and make them want to read more about what the celebrity is saying. i put them within the story so it stands out and looks quite professional.

Image- After editing the photos i took i used the polariod effect for both pictures as even though its very modern magazine it still gives a old effect and a down to earth feel for the artist.

mind map (thinking of concept)

GENRE  - the genre of my magazine would be hip/hop & R&B as they are the most popular genres of music in modern days, also the most famous people in the music industry and rappers or r&b singers which show how popular that type of music is.

contents research

by looking at contents pages from other music magazines i realised what worked and what didnt i learnt that many of them keep the name/ logo of there magazine in the top left corner so it is the first thing the readers see. i also realised they only use 1 main image which is usually for the cover story or a exclusive interview for a double page spread, they do usually put another picture in for a feature story overall i realised they keep to a limited number of pictures to keep it professional and the fact there is only one page to put it on you wouldnt want it to be to crowded. i also learnt the date and website are usually at the top of the magazine so people can see it first as there eyes automatically look at the top of the page. music magazines also use subheadings for the contents page to make it clearer to the audience what is where and on what page number.
for my contents page i will use the conventions i have found in music magazines like Q and Vibe.

evaluation part 2 and 3

my media product represents a socail group of quite popular, adverage teenagers and young adults. The postures on both of the magazines are very simliar apart from p.diddy is more slouched which could show an attitude where as cassie is more up right but they both have there hands by there sides. both of there facial expressions are quite serious looking into the camera lenses even though both of there eyes are slighty coverd by sunglasses and hats which could shows there not giving everything away yet. there costumes are quite similar in some ways as they are both fashionable and popular, they are both wearing hats, quite baggy jackets apart from his is fur and cassies is denim. both backgrounds are using the same colour scheme(grey) but are both taken at different places cassies is outside where as diddy's is inside. the lighting is quite simialr and they are both in black and white. i think both magazines represent similar social groups which are teenagers and young adults who are quite laid back and casual i think that my magzine reflects this throughout. the person in my magazine looks very normal and is not to fancy and extreme with there appearence.

The media institution that would distribute my magazine would be IPC as it is the UK's largest media publishing company and publishes some of the biggest and most popular magazines. i would also choose them as they are a cross media platform company and they publish online which would be ideal for my target audience as they are young and young people are always usuing the internet on there moblies, laptops and tablets. i would also choose IPC as it publishes NME which is a huge, well known music magazine also as IPC are a huge company they would be able to get huge celebritys to feature in my magazine.

double page spread offical story

Cassie is fresh on the scene and  has took the industry by storm, By the end of 2012, the 20-year-old had signed a reported multimillion-dollar contract with Def Jam. when Choice caught up with the london based singer she was traveling to L.A after touring all around Europe , she said she was just beginning to put together ideas for her major-label debut, which may or may not come out this year. we asked her what it was like being on her first ever tour she said " it was amazing the feeling of doing what i love everynight is a dream, but it does get tiring but the adreniline keeps me going, It's awesome whenever a crowd knows the lyrics to your songs, especially when they're already so hard for me remember sometimes (laughs). After "You and me" going to no.1 on the charts list she hasn't stopped, she has releases other chart topping songs such as "What Now" and "The Boys" ft Big Sean. We asked her what it was like working with the "finally famous" rapper and who she would like to work with in the future she said " Working with big sean was great, when i got the call i couldn't say yes fast enough he's a sick rapper and he's a really cool guy. If i could work with anyone it would have to be kanye west. i love that man. he's such a talented guy and a lyrical genius".  Growing up cassie always would listen to music and sing at home but never thought anything of it so we asked her when was it when she realized that she could start doing music seriously? she replied "my friends were the ones who told me that i should start doing it seriously, so we looked around and i started getting gigs in bars and clubs and uploading my songs on the internet and i got got noticed by DJ Khaled and he got me in the studio for the first time and everyone was really feeling my music which meant so much to me since i was just starting out". Cassies career has took off so fast we asked what is next for her after touring around Europe and releasing all these hits she must have something planned, she said "im starting to put things together for a album, i have wrote a few songs and have some people in mind to feature on them, im on the way to L.A to record and work on it, which should be real fun, you know i dont do this for any reason other than the fact i love music" we look forward to hearing more from Cassie and hopefully the album will come out this year. You can buy all of Cassies singles on Itunes which are all out now.

double page spread research

by researching into music magazine double page spreads helped me how to write mine i look at the different layouts, fonts and language they use. i noticed that alot of double page spreads keep the image/images on one page only and keep the story on the other page for a more professional look, as they keep . they all have a strap line or a small bit of writing before the story summerising what the story is about. they usually include a quote by the artist that make it stand out and get people to read it. depending on the type of magazine; informal, formal or the genre of it debates what type of writing the story is, most storys are wrote to inform the reader but have also wrote to persude the reader in to reading more.
for my magazine i have also chose to keep to the usual conventions of a double page spread i have used language to inform the reader but also used some quotes to draw the reader into reading more about the artist.

Photo editing

for my magazine pictures i used a few different websites and softwares to edit my pictures. i used photo shop to edit all of my pictures on to a Polaroid picture frame, i chose photoshop because it had all the right adjustments and transformations i needed such as crop, scale, distort, contrast/ brightness, black and white effect. i also used a website called Rollip that i found on the internet, i used this because it had some good filters i could use for certain pictures i chose the filter "vintage sun down" as it went well with the Polaroid frame. i also used tuxpi.com another photo editing website i found on the internet to edit another image for my double page spread which gave my picture an older effect to go with the old fashioned Polaroid frame.

double page and contents page analysis

I looked at a double page spread in Kerrang magazine. The color scheme is red, white and black. The background is black and the title is bold and in red and white to stand out to the reader. They have used more than one image which makes it more eye catching because there's more to look at.

i looked at a contents page of Q magazine. the colour scheme was red which matches the logo for Q and black and white. the layout is a coloumn of writing on the left and a huge picture of his face on the right which is the main attention of the page.the image is of james blunts face and he has no expression. they have made some of the text in bold.
i looked at a double page spread of NME magazine which is about lily allen the colour scheme is black and white but she is wearing a bright red top which stands out against the white background. lily takes up most of one of the pages which makes her the main attraction.  the title is a quote of hers that is in different size letters in a newspaper font which makes it more interesting and different. the title takes up most of the page and is even bigger then the picture to catch peoples eye and make them read it instead of just flick past it.

music magazine in shops

Things that make a succesfull music magazine are powerful story, a compelling image and a benefit spelled out for the reader.fonts, cover lines, images and use of white space. a snappy main story cover line, with powerful typography, that sparks curiosity descriptive words to grab the reader.on’t let the cover get so crowded with text that nothing stands out. Do not put busy backgrounds, lots of people, or complicated images on the cover. music magazine genres there are only usually a few magazines on show in shops let alone genres, the main genres they have are Rock and Pop as they are the most popular type of music. it is important to see music magasines in shops as they promote music artists and are the main reason aritsts get radio plays, music videos shown and exposure to the world. The magazines are on the middle shelf at eye view so its right in front of you when you walk in, it is next to the magazines about cars and motorbikes which could suggest music magazines are more popular to males. The rock magazine stood out because it was mainly black and the other magazines were in colour. the institution that owns kerrang and Q are bauer media group, which is a huge successful group owning many famous magazine brands. Looking at music magazines in shops helped what my magazine will look like because it showed me what colors stand out against other magazines e.g. black white and red stood out against the other colors pink, yellow and blue. The fonts that stand out are bold and simple compared to other fonts that are hard to read and swirly.

representation of men and woman in genre

Hip-Hop/ RnB

Hip hop is a male dominated genre in which authenticity has been identified with masculinity having lots or money, nice cars and homes, lots of women, the men are usually african american. Female artists have traditionally faced many barriers in entering hip hop and have been marginalized as performers and not taken seriously.  Women are usually classed as objects not human and in alot of rap/hip hop/RnB music videos and and often not wearing much clothing so are represented quite bad in that way. women usually have to come across quite masculine to get heard and taken seriously in hip hop. Currently hip hop and rnb are becoming very popular there are more and more female rappers getting in the industry all different races and ethnicity's and not being so stereotypical.

music magazine in depth analysis

Kerrang! is a brand that specialises in Rock Music. It originally began as a magazine and in 2004 Kerrang Radio was launced. A Kerrang tv channel also exists and as of 2005, all of its programme content is music videos, the majority of which is open scheduled, for text requests from their playlist.

What institution owns your magazine? e.g. kerrang Bauer media
Bauer Media Group owns Kerrang! it is a multinational media company headquartered
in HamburgGermany which operates in 15 countries worldwide. It is Europe’s largest
privately owned publishing Group. The Group is a worldwide media empire offering
over 300 magazines in 15 countries, as well as online, TV and radio stations.Bauer Media is
a cross platform UK-based media Group consisting of many companies collected
around two main divisions – Magazines and Radio - widely recognized and rewarded as
being industry innovators.

What effect does this have on the content? whats in it like pics, people, writing
(stories)
The effect bauer media group has on kerrang! is because bauer are a huge media group so
they can get huge stars and exclusives in there magazine. They can get all artists to the
same place for photo-shoots. Same themes throughout the magazine e.g. same colour and
fonts influenced, they can get the biggest things that are going on in the rock world each
week.

Let’s discuss the flat plan – what have you learnt about the magazine?
adverts, double pages on people, i have learnt they focus on bands as they use up a lot of
double page spreads on bands. They have alot of pull out posters so

Discuss the mise en scene (Props, lighting, setting, costume) – what impact
does this have on the audience?
the lighting is dark and black but light is shown on there faces. the costumes are leather
with spikes and chains they also wear make up which is dark eye make up and white
painted faces. Busy alot on page, packed. gives our main base of younger readers everything
they need to get into and on top of this the interest in older, harder bands, which gives
their role as an educator.

Who is the target audience? How do you know this?
The ages range from 16-24. The target audience is mainly for the younger teenage readers who are more open to different genres of rock music from Emo, Heavy metal and

Thrash etc. The magazine is for teenagers and young adults because the adverts relate to there interests -
festival and concert tickets, clothing, advertising helping people to get into the music industry who are in a
band or solo. the price is quite cheaper then other magazines which could suggest its for people with less
money which are mostly young people with no jobs. gender would be mainly boys as there are hard rock and
metal iconic male bands on the front cover pulling angry faces or violent expressions. but can also be for
female readers as they are targeted by the use of male bands on free pull out posters and feature interviews.

What is the tone of the writing? (persuade, inform, choose article and look at it
or overall tone lighthearted happy or serious)
the tone of very casual and relaxed, it is very informal as the target audience are young, there is a humorous attitude but it also it informs the reader as well.

What do they offer their readership? (free poster, c.d., etc tickets)
in kerrang! they are offering the reader 10 free posters, also chances to win opportunities
to go to concerts and meet bands, play music with famous bands.

What elements would you like to ‘borrow’ for your own magazine? (what
would i want to use in my magazine
i would borrow the layout of the contents page as it is set out nicely in columns to read.
